Layoffs Hit Capcom Vancouver Today, Capcom Confirms

It looks like the next installment of Dead Rising could be in trouble, if a number of layoffs that just hit Capcom Vancouver are any indication. After Kotaku’s initial report and confirmation to Destructoid about the layoffs, Capcom has stated the following in a statement:

“Capcom Vancouver has undergone a restructure which has impacted approximately 30 percent of the studio, as part of its regular periodic assessment of upcoming projects and overall studio goals. The team is continuing to work hard to support the recent release of Puzzle Fighter for mobile and is dedicated to its flagship Dead Rising series.”

It’s estimated that about 50 employees were lost in the layoffs, and according to Kotaku’s report on the situation, it looks like Capcom is looking to change directions in a way when it comes to the upcoming Dead Rising game. Of course, layoffs are never fun for anyone involved, especially when it comes to making the video games and products everyone in the industry obviously loves, so hopefully those affected today will land on their feet soon and find a new gig soon.

This does leave the future of Dead Rising somewhat in question, but Capcom says that essentially these layoffs were simply a part of a “regular periodic assessment.”
