Just Dance 2021 Revealed During Nintendo Direct; Wii Version Dropped

Just Dance 2021, announcement trailer, Nintendo Direct

In their usual celebratory and flamboyant fashion, Ubisoft has revealed Just Dance 2021 with a flashy announcement trailer on the Nintendo Direct.

The announcement trailer, which you can see below, is set to the latest popular dance hit “Dance Monkey” by Tones And I, one of 40 songs that will be featured in the game, along with “Senorita” by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello, “Feel Special” by Twice, “Don’t Start Now” by Dua Lipa, “Temperature” by Sean Paul, “all the good girls go to hell” by Billie Eilish and more.

One interesting aspect of today’s announcement is this will be the first Just Dance game in over a decade not be created for the Wii, making Just Dance 2020 the last Wii game in the series.

The absence of the Wii version of Just Dance 2021 may be shocking, considering that the Wii was the birthplace of the Just Dance series as Nintendo’s answer to Dance Dance Revolution, breaking dance moves out of the confines of the dance mat and allowing players to just go with the flow of the dance moves displayed on the screen.

Since the release of Just Dance 2014 in 2013, aside from the Wii U, the Just Dance series expanded to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and later the Nintendo Switch, giving players the freedom to not only play with motion-controllers designed for each console, but also with their phones using the Just Dance Controller app they can download from the app store — as long as they don’t fling it out of their hands, that is.

Even with the release of the Nintendo Switch in 2017, the Just Dance games were somehow still being made for the Wii, even though it had reached the end of its market life cycle four years prior. Just Dance may have still have been available for the Wii because not everyone could afford the new consoles the series expanded to.

With the Wii version Just Dance 2021 off the books, it’s safe to say that the Wii is officially dead and gone, but not forgotten.

Just Dance 2021 will release Nov. 12 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch and Google Stadia.
