Homefront: The Revolution Director Addresses Development Difficulties in End-Game Message

Never say die.

It isn’t uncommon for games to undergo unfortunate development cycles that bring them to the brink of cancellation. Homefront: The Revolution is one such game and it knows it. Upon completion of the game, Homefront: The Revolution displays a brief pre-credits scene from the game’s director, Hasit Zala, acknowledging the difficult path the game endeavored upon and thanking many for following it through.

“Homefront the revolution has been in development for just over 4 years and as some of you may be aware the path has not always been a smooth one. Several reboots, the original publisher going into liquidation, the development studio changing ownership… I could go on. Thankfully throughout all these difficult times key people have kept faith and belief in the IP and the team’s ability to deliver a quality game, and I would especially like to acknowledge Klemens Kundratitz’ and Huw Beynon’s unwavering support without which this game and this studio would not exist,” says Zala.

Of the two men specifically mentioned, Klemens Kundratitz is the CEO of Koch Media, the parent company of the game’s developer Deep Silver, while Huw Beynon acts as the Homefront franchise’s Global Brand Manager. Beynon was also Homefront’s Head of Global Communications for the games original publisher, THQ, before they filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December, 2012, and sold the Homefront IP to Crytek. Crytek would work with Deep Silver to continue development on the game, including scrapping much of the game and designing it from the ground up, until July 2014, when financial problems and internal restructuring would once again lead to the sale of the Homefront IP, this time to Koch Media.

Zala proceeds to thank “the team members that have made it to the end” and furthers that creating “a game of this size and complexity with a relatively small team is a remarkable achievement.” Finally, Zala closes out the letter by thanking the players and goes on to promise that “this is just the beginning.” It sounds like we’ll be seeing more from the Homefront franchise in the future. Homefront: The Revolution, Pre-Credits Message, Hasit Zala

Whether you liked Homefront: The Revolution or not, it’s quite hard to deny this inspiring story of a game that just wouldn’t die. Through all of their troubles and turmoils, it’s rather humbling to see a team accept their spotted past instead of sweeping it under the rug and denying it ever happened.
