You aren’t escaping Harry Potter just yet. With another Fantastic Beasts film on the way, Warner Bros. also recently created a new gaming label called Portkey Games and announced two Harry Potter video game projects. Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is one of them, and it’s a mobile RPG that puts players in the shoes of a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and LA-based developer Jam City released the first trailer today.
Judging from the trailer, Harry Potter fans can finally relive their fantasy of receiving that letter telling of their enrollment in Hogwarts. As their user-created witch or wizard, the player will be sorted into a house and attend classes taught by familiar character, including Hagrid, Snape and McGonagall. A quote from Professor Dumbledore implies that player choice will be a prominent mechanic in the game, along with social interaction and dueling with fellow Hogwarts students.
Per a press release, the game will take place “between Harry Potter’s birth and his enrollment at Hogwarts, when Nymphadora Tonks and Bill Weasley were students,” and feature “both large plot arcs and smaller stories such as relationship quests.” The player’s avatar can also have a pet of the player’s choice, and will gain new skills and abilities throughout the RPG.
The other Harry Potter mobile game announced is the AR game Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, from Pokemon Go developer Niantic. Hogwarts Mystery will be available for iOS and Android devices sometime in 2018. The game will be demoed for visitors at the Universal Studios in Orlando from Jan. 26 to 28.
