It’s been a long time coming, but a trailer for the upcoming sequel series to the anime cult classic FLCL has been revealed. Arriving in 2018, both FLCL 2 and FLCL 3 will mark 15 years since the original six-episode series crashed its yellow Vespa onto the scene. It’s about to take the anime world by storm once more, if the trailer is anything to go by.
Naota Nandaba and Haruko Haruhara are out as the main leads this time around, replaced by a female star and a cast of what appear to be very colorful characters punctuated by a soundtrack from none other than J-rock greats The Pillows themselves. The trailer features our new female heroine Hidomi lounging in bed with a pair of adorable cat-eared headphones, not unlike the ones you can actually purchase for yourself.
The revival will be comprised of 12 episodes split into FLCL 2 and FLCL 3, presumable six episodes apiece, and it’s being produced this time by Production I.G. and Studio Bones in lieu of Gainax, the studio responsible for the original show.
FLCL 2 and FLCL 3 will be airing exclusively on Toonami when they finally make their debut in 2018, so you’ve got plenty of time to sit back, relax, and get caught up on the older episodes before diving right back in again. It looks like this season’s definitely going to be a doozy. You might also consider reading the manga and the couple of novelizations written as companions to the original episodes. There’s a lot to digest.
