Doom has taken home the honor of Best Action Game at the 2016 Game Awards.
Conan O’Brien appeared on screen to announce the nominees and winner, enthusiastically revealing the Bethesda-published shooter as this year’s winner. The bloody, frantic shooter was up against Overwatch, Battlefield 1, Gears of War 4, and Titanfall 2. It was praised by critics upon release due to its incredibly strong story mode which took players on a journey to rip apart demons and spill buckets of blood through the fiery depths of hell.
Developed by Id software, the original creators of the series, it harkened back to the first two entries in the Doom franchise, relying heavily on strafing and gore. Doom was a show of what a single-player shooter campaign could be, in a time in gaming where online multiplayer seemed to be dominating the industry. Doom is also nominated for best soundtrack and Id is up for best developer/studio.
Stay tuned to Twinfinite as the 2016 Game Awards continue over the course of the night.
