Following the announcement that JRPG hit Final Fantasy XV will getting a PC port earlier this week, game director Hajime Tabata has confirmed in an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun at Gamescom that the title will indeed receive mod support.
“I think one of the biggest things players can expect is mod support. We definitely want to do it. We haven’t actually managed to get our full modding policy or discussions on that finished but at the moment we do really want to do it. We’ll have the full details around autumn time.”
As for when the feature will be implemented, Tabata went on to say: “I think that whether we do it afterwards or have it at launch itself is something that depends on development… but I think we can try to get the modding in as quick as possible.”
Finally, the last question on everyone’s mind remains whether or not the mods will be free, seeing as how several publishers have strict policies in place in regards to them. This is what the man had to say to that: “I think a lot of people do want the mods as free as possible and with as few limitations from our side as possible, so we are going to look into making that the kind of system we have for the mods, so we’ll have to figure out all the technical terms around that.”
This obviously opens up an array of possibilities for Windows users come launch day, and having mods in place will mark one of the first times Square Enix has openly allowed users to transform one of their flagship titles to their heart’s desire. We’ll have to see what creations the community has in store come early next year, though it’s almost guaranteed that something meme-worthy will spawn from this.
In other Final Fantasy XV news, the game has been confirmed recently to not be getting the sequel treatment, as Tabata believes that doing so might impact the brand in a negative way.
