After over a year and a half of waiting, we finally have the first screenshots of the battle mechanics that will be featured in the highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII remake.

Tetsuya Nomura, whose name many fans recognize as the father of Final Fantasy, revealed in an interview with Famitsu that the battle system would be quite different from its original 1997 design and would feature more action on the battlefield as well as destructible environments. Monsters will also effect surroundings areas based on their elemental properties and offer new challenges for the player to create a more believable and exciting battle experience. This will come as no shock to anyone that has played the latest installment in the franchise, Final Fantasy XV, as the game includes many, if not all of these same mechanics.

Recently, we also got a glimpse the new command menu through the screenshot above. Kingdom Hearts fans should recognize and rejoice over this set up as it greatly resembles the one from the Disney-inspired titles. It makes us wonder if weather or not the design of the menu will change from area to area as it does in Kingdom Hearts, though we highly doubt it. (Still, it might be cool, right?)

There is still no word on a release date for Final Fantasy VII or how the rest of the game’s development has been progressing since it’s announcement at E3 2015, but with E3 2017 only months away, we have our fingers crossed that Square-Enix will deliver some good news.
