It’s been almost 20 years since the original Fear Effect on PlayStation released, but that isn’t stopping Square Enix Collective from announcing Fear Effect Reinvented, a brand new reimagining of the series for modern consoles. It’s coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC in 2018 from the french studio Sushee. Sushee is also handling the upcoming Fear Effect Sedna, the latest chapter in the Fear Effect franchise.
In fact, it was working on Fear Effect Sedna that drove Sushee to think about reimagining the original game. According to Sushee founder Benjamin Anseaume, the outfit realized how much fans still love the franchise, and thus “realized that as well as offering established fans something new with Sedna, it would be great to introduce fresh players to Fear Effect by remaking that first great adventure.”
The game will retain fixed camera angles but will feature new and improved graphics, of course, although that’s essentially the only thing that the developer has come forward with as of yet. Hopefully when the remake does come out it will keep much of what the original game did, with its intriguing art style, characters, and narrative. I’m definitely looking forward to whatever Sushee has in store for the series, so long as it doesn’t change things and make the game unrecognizable.
