Cuphead, the indie hit with a pension for difficulty and a classical animation aesthetic, has passed a major sales milestone.
Announced by developer Studio MDHR, it was revealed the game has now sold over 3 million units worldwide. In celebration of the achievement, the game will be on sale via Steam and the Xbox One for a limited time.
“It’s hard for us to express just how appreciative we are to everyone who has played and enjoyed our niche little run & gun game with the wacky rubber-hose characters,” the studio writes. “So if you haven’t had a chance to wallop the Devil, it’s a good day for a swell battle!”
Released Sept. 29, 2017, the game places players in the role of Cuphead, a sentient tea cup out to regain his soul from the Devil after losing a bet at King Dice’s Casino. To do so, he must track down and defeat other debtors, blasting past their special powers gained from their occult contracts.
The game has continued to be a critical and fan darling for its challenge-based run and gun gameplay, hand-drawn 1930s animation style and engrossing soundtrack. The title also took home several awards in 2017 for its animation, art style and music from the Golden Joysticks, The Game Awards and many more events.
Cuphead is currently available on the Xbox One and PC. For more on the game, check out the recently announced DLC set for release in 2019.
