Gearbox Teases Majority of Team Is Working on Borderlands 3

At least 90%, to be more accurate.

Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford teased that the majority of the company – at least 90% of its staff – is “working on the thing I think most of you guys want us to be working on” during the Inside Gearbox Software panel at PAX West yesterday. The hint was an obvious nod to Borderlands 3.

Acknowledging that most of the audience was probably there just to hear more news on the highly anticipated sequel, Pitchford went on to mention that publishers have a saying that goes “A product does not exist until it’s announced”, indicating he couldn’t say more lest he get in trouble.

Headquartered in Frisco, Texas, Gearbox has about 300 people working at its main branch. Another 70 are located in the company’s new studios in Québec City, Canada, plus a lot of freelancers and contractors are involved with any project the publisher has under its wing, adding anywhere from 50 to 100 people or more. In total, 90% of nearly 500 talented individuals may be working on the next Borderlands, which is not a small number at all.

Very little is known about the upcoming entry in the franchise except that it is indeed coming. Pitchford confirmed that the game was in development back at PAX South 2015 then later said that the title could very well be called something other than Borderlands 3 at a panel at PAX East one year later. Borderlands 2 art director Scott Kester is expected to return for the sequel.

The next Borderlands was confirmed to be out of pre-production during April of last year. The game is probably not going to come to the Switch, and a funny Easter egg was found in Battleborn’s DLC.  As it stands, this is all we know about the mysterious sequel.
