Throughout Call of Duty’s history, there have been maps that captured the imagination, excited players, and were just a good time to play on. The Black Ops series in particular has received praise for its map design, and now five of these fan-favorite Treyarc maps are returning in the upcoming Black Ops 4.
Announced today during a live stream, the five maps returning will be:
- Jungle, from Black Ops
- Slums, from Black Ops 2
- Summit, from Black Ops
- Firing Range, from Black Ops
- Nuketown, from Black Ops, Black Ops 2, and Black Ops 3.
While it may not be surprising that Nuketown is on the list, since it has been a mainstay of the series, these other maps have either been completely redesigned or not put back into the games at all. Firing Range reappeared in the Black Ops 2 DLC Uprising as the Studio map, changing from a Military Training site in Cuba to a Hollywood Studio. Summit reappeared in the Black Ops 2 DLC Vengeance as the map Uplink, a mountaintop facility deep in the jungles of Myanmar. Jungle and Slums have not yet made a second appearance in any of the games.
One of the most interesting comments Treyarc made was that they want to preserve what made these maps so fun and popular to begin with. Despite there being futuristic remakes of some of the maps, this comment makes it seem as though their return could mean faithful remakes of the originals, futuristic elements aside. These maps will be available in the base game when it launches.
Despite these maps being favorites, the E3 experience Treyarc and Activision have planned has four new Black Ops 4 maps available for play.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will be released Oct. 12 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The PC release will be through the Battle.net client, a first for the Call of Duty series.
