File this away as “unsurprising”, but it turns out actor Michael Fassbender had never played an Assassin’s Creed game before signing on to the project.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Oscar-nominated actor admits to not being much of a gamer, likely having no concept of an “Animus” or a “Desmond” or the centuries-long war between Templars and Assassins that the foundation of the franchise is built on.
To his credit, however, Fassbender says he has been catching up since agreeing to the role.
“I’ve played it since [being offered the job] mainly to get an idea of the physicality of the character. We’re striving to find something special. We believe the whole concept around it is special and want to service that the best we can. The fans are really passionate: very specific and they expect accuracy and historical detail. We’re really trying to capitalize and feed on and enjoy the fun element. We’re working hard to make this something special.”
While the character he will be portraying, Callum Lynch, is a new character to the series, having a foundation for what the series is about is important research for a film adaptation such as this. Fassbender’s comments show he is taking the role – and the lore – seriously. The film will be released on December 21, 2016.
What do you think of Fassbender’s casting? Do you have a favorite film you’ve seen him in? And who is your favorite Assassin’s Creed protagonist? Let us know in the comments below!
