DC’s latest foray onto the big screen, Aquaman, is turning out to be one of the company’s biggest successes, surpassing $822 million globally and $200 million in North America, according to a report from Variety.
This means that Aquaman has beaten the worldwide sales of Wonder Woman ($821 million), will soon beat Batman v Superman ($873 million) and will likely pass $900 million. This would make Aquaman the best performing DC movie since The Dark Knight Rises ($1.09 billion).
Aquaman also ranked high for New Years Day sales pulling in $16.78 million. This makes Aquaman the fourth best selling movie on New Years Day only behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Avatar, and Meet The Fockers.
One of the biggest contributing factors to the film’s success is its performance in foreign markets. Overseas, Aquaman has made over $600 million, making it the best performing DC Superhero film of all time outside of North America. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film has made $260 million in China alone.
Aquaman had little trouble beating out it’s Christmas competition in Mary Poppins Returns ($184 million) and Bumblebee ($157 million). Critical reception also seems to be mostly positive with a current Rotten Tomatoes score of 64% and an audience score of 81%.
With many days left in its theatrical run, Aquaman is posed to beat out much of its DC film competition and could even become the ninth superhero film to cross $1 billion in worldwide sales.
