Buy the Shovel from the Shop ASAP

As soon as you start up Link’s Awakening, you’ll be able to go to the Town Tool shop and buy a shovel which will help you in finding the secret seashells and getting the ever-powerful Koholint Sword.

The shovel costs 200 rupees so you might not have enough, but you can always cut up some grass or play the crane game at Trendy Game to earn some extra pocket change.

As a matter of fact, we have a guide on how to earn rupees quickly if you’re interested!

Keep up With the Trading Quest and Make Sure to Finish It

Not sure if you’ve heard but there is a very long trading quest sequence in Link’s Awakening that has you trading around items all over the island like a crazy person.

With about 14 items that are part of the trading quests, it can take some time to reach the end of it, but make sure that you do, because there is a great reward at the end, and it’ll just fulfill your completionist soul.

It starts off by winning the Yoshi doll from Trendy Game in Mabe Village and then giving it to the mom in the house in the northern section of the town and then taking the item she gives you to a baby Chain Chomp and then taking that item and… you get the gist of it.

Here’s a full guide to that trading sequence if you need help.

Collect as Many Seashells as You Can

Secret Seashells and pieces of heart are the two types of hidden items that you’ll be looking for on your quest to awaken the great Wind Fish, and these can be pretty hard to come by, especially the seashells.

Luckily, once you collect about 10-15 of these, you can go over to the Seashell Mansion and trade them in to receive a seashell sensor that can tell you if you there are seashells nearby you, making it way easier to track them down.

Most of them are found by digging into a spot in the ground or found underneath a rock, but some can also be obtained by running into a tree with your pegasus boots –just keep an eye out for them whenever you can.

Get That Magnifying Glass to Solve the Final Puzzle

Not going to spoil anything for the newbies in the room, but the last “puzzle” in Link’s Awakening is solved by reading a book in the Mabe Village library, just west of the town near the boys playing catch with a baseball.

There, you will find a black-covered book that holds a secret set of directions. Just make sure to finish the trading quest so that you can get the magnifying glass so that you’re actually able to read the book and decipher its instructions… you’ll definitely need them for later.

Get Some Empty Bottles

Empty Bottles are super important to get early on so that you can capture the magical fairies that you’ll come across on Koholint Island.

You can actually get a fairy bottle very early in the game by going to the fisherman in Mabe Village and paying some rupees to catch some fish.

But, we won’t be catching fish. If you look carefully, there is an empty bottle at the bottom of the lake for you to grab. Just lure it in and make sure not to hit the other fish while you’re pulling it up.

And when you find a fairy, pull out that bottle and you will be able to trap the fairy, allowing you to heal whenever you need to.
