If you caught the House of the Dragon Season 1 finale last night, you’ll know it’s a doozy. But among the episode’s countless happenings/developments, one shocking bit of violence stands out: Daemon, momentarily consumed by rage toward his wife/niece Rhaenyra, seizes her by the neck. We know Daemon is capable of heinous things (like murdering his former wife and gaslighting her kin when they confront him about it), but the suddenness of this moment made it incredibly shocking. Here’s why Daemon choked Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon.
Daemon Choking Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon Explained
As Rhaenyra struggles to breathe around his constricting fingers, Daemon angrily tells her that Viserys was a slave to his omens and couldn’t bear the thought of his reign not meaning anything. There seems to be another reason behind his rage, though.
As frustrated as he is about Rhaenyra’s aversion to war, Daemon appears far more upset knowing that Viserys did not trust him with Aegon the Conqueror’s vision. It’s here that Daemon delivers one of the best quotes of the season: “Dreams didn’t make us kings. Dragons did.” Damn, Daemon. You’re a cruel bastard but you’re absolutely mesmerizing to watch. After she is released, though, Rhaenyra realizes Viserys never even mentioned the “Song of Ice and Fire” vision to Daemon. Daemon doesn’t confirm or deny it, but he does storm off looking thoroughly pissed.
There’s quite a bit going on here but in true House of the Dragons fashion, little is confirmed and much is implied. Looks like we will have to wait for Season 2 for clearer answers about just how much Viserys hid from his brother.
And that’s why Daemon choked Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon. What did you think of the House of the Dragon Season 1 finale? Let us know!
