What Is the Triarchy in House of Dragon?

The Triarchy is an alliance of the Free Cities of Myr, Lys and Tyrosh, cities that began as colonial outposts of the Valyrian empire, also known as the Valyrian Freehold.

In the map below, the Triarchy is situated in a triangular formation on a series of islands known as the Stepstones, in the Narrow Sea south of Dragonstone.

The Triarchy, also known as The Kingdom of Three Daughters in Westeros, was formed after Volantis, the oldest of the Free Cities, tried to assert its dominance over the region. The cities of Myr, Lys and Tyrosh banded together, expelled the interlopers, and swore an eternal alliance in recognition of the feat, with all three cities working towards a common cause.

An ongoing plot thread in House of the Dragon is the disruption of trade around the Stepstones, after Prince-Admiral Craghas Drahar, also known as the Crabfeeder, takes control of the area. Initially, this move was praised by Westerosi merchants, as Craghas rooted out the dens of pirates who had occupied the islands previously, but they quickly became resentful of the exorbitant tolls the Crabfeeder subsequently enacted.

At the end of House of the Dragon season 1, we learn that Corlys finally wrests control of the Stepstones in the latest war, and the Triarchy is now under his control. He also pledges his allegiance to Rhaenyra, and it looks like the Triarchy will become integral to their upcoming conflict with the greens.
