Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3: What the ATK Symbols Mean

Use your attack buttons!

Like many fighting games, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3’s menus can seem fairly cryptic when reading through them and trying to learn new moves. The game doesn’t exactly go out of its way to explain just what all the different symbols mean, which can make it rather confusing. One of the most common forms of these is the ATK symbol. So we’re here to explain just what this means.

In Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, the ATK symbol is short for using an attack button. An attack button constitutes as any of the three normal attack buttons: light, medium, or heavy. When you see the ATK symbol in a pink circle, it is indicating that any of these three buttons may be used to perform the special move. It should be noted, however, that the move may change depending on which of these buttons you choose to input. Choosing the light button will generally make the attack much faster, but deal less damage. The medium will often make the attack slower than light, but deal slightly more damage, and the heavy will normally make the attack very slow, but deal considerable damage. These buttons can also change other aspects of the move such as which direction they attack from or how far the character will teleport.

The other common form of the ATK symbol you will find in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is for Hyper Combos. This will often depict two pink ATK symbols next to each other. This means that the player will have to input two of the three attack buttons for the move to be fired off. Unlike special moves, it doesn’t matter which normal attack buttons you choose as the Hyper Combo will be the same regardless, just be sure to press two of them. You can also press the R2 button in place of the two ATK buttons if you are on default controls.
