Is Sonic Frontiers Open-World?

Video Source: Sega

The short answer is, yes, Sonic Frontiers will be the first open-world game in the franchise, with Sega playing up that this title offers “open-zone platforming.” Sonic will touch down on the Starfall Islands, an open-ended world where he will be able to platform, solve puzzles, and engage with enemies as he typically does.

With this new open-world area, gamers will prepare themselves for more action and combat-oriented gameplay than in past Sonic titles. The larger world will also offer Sonic more room to run around, which also means players will have flexibility in the order that they choose to tackle the game.

It’s worth noting that the entire game is not an open world, as Sonic Frontiers will still offer linear sections known as “Cyber Space” levels. These levels will play similarly to Sonic’s established formula while shifting between third-person and side-scrolling sections in the same way as titles like Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations.

That’s all you need to know about Sonic Frontiers’ open world. If you’d like to find out more about this upcoming Sonic adventure, check out Twinfinite’s interview with Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka to learn more about the new direction of Sonic.
