The second character to come to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as part of the fighters pass volume 2 is none other than Minecraft Steve from uh… Minecraft. This fighter uses his signature building blocks from the creative sandbox game and can craft some useful objects by gathering materials from the ground underneath him. Since this character has some tricky moves to pull off, here’s a guide on how to play Minecraft Steve in Smash Bros Ultimate.
How to Play Minecraft Steve in Smash Bros Ultimate
Attacks and Special Moves
Most of Minecraft Steve’s abilities rely on him having materials gathered, which can vary depending on the type of stage you’re playing on and the area that you’re standing on. For example, if you stand on sand you can gather some dirt or if you’re on a metal surface like Star Fox’s ship, you can get some iron.
And then by going over to the crafting table that sits on the stage, you can press B to craft an upgraded weapon. Each type of sword that you craft deals different amounts of damage and can break easily but you always want to make sure that you have a diamond sword when possible.
Basically, just like Minecraft, the rarer the materials, the stronger the tools. You can also spend your materials to use Steve’s side special, down special, and you can even build blocks by pressing B when there’s space below you.
Let’s go over all of the individual moves now:
Neutral Special (Mine/Craft/Create Block) – Collect materials from the ground by mining the floor. Craft tools while at the crafting table or place blocks while in the air.
Side Special (Minecart) – An iron minecart will travel along the rails (if you have materials). You can jump out of the mine cart as well, and if an enemy comes into contact with it, they will be trapped inside for a few seconds, depending on how hard they struggle and their percentage level.
Down Special (TNT) – Use your materials to set up an explosive TNT bomb that can cause over 30% damage to your opponents or to yourself if you’re not careful. It’ll blow up if someone steps on the switch or if you hit it hard enough. You can also hold down special and then move around to change the location of the trigger-sensitive plate.
Up Special (Elytra) – This is Minecraft Steve’s aerial recovery that can help bring him back to the stage when you’re knocked off. You can adjust the trajectory by moving up and down, and you can also damage enemies by flying into them at the right time. It’s a little tricky to handle at first but just make sure to practice before jumping into matches so that you can get a feel for it.
Final Smash (House of Bloom) – Create a big piston that strikes enemies out to one side. Make sure you’re directly facing a fighter before unleashing its power, otherwise you’ll waste the move. This can deal about 70% damage if performed correctly.
Minecraft Steven’s Strengths and Weaknesses in Smash Bros Ultimate
Strengths
- Steve’s down grab does a lot of damage and leaves opponents open for follow-up combos.
- Speaking of grabs, Steve’s grab has great reach.
- He attacks very quickly once you upgrade your sword.
- His down tilt can help with edge-guarding.
Weaknesses
- Recovery is not that great and can easily lead you to your death if not practiced.
- When you’re bare-handed, it’s hard to mine and can be disastrous for offense purposes.
Minecraft Steve Strategy and Tips
Overall, Minecraft Steve seems like a viable character for anyone willing to get a grasp on his moveset. The crafting mechanics may seem a bit daunting at first, but it’s really not that complicated at the end of the day.
You need to make sure that you’re mining with B as often as possible to gather materials and always upgrade to the gold sword or the diamond sword to deal maximum damage.
Just make sure not to mine when you’re close to an opponent because that leaves you open for attack. Don’t just stand there and mine, though; just do it for a quick second here and there when the opportunity arises, like when you’re invincible after dying, for example.
If you end up bare-handed, you’ll find yourself unable to protect yourself, and your side/down specials will be useless as well.
