How to Use Spells – Skyrim
Spells are a great method of combat in Skyrim. Aside from allowing you to maintain a healthy distance from your enemies, they do some really badass things. Whether you want to summon a flame spirit to protect you, or shoot lightning out of your fingertips, here’s how to use spells in Skyrim, and how to change between different ones quickly.
First up, head to your in-game menu by pressing Circle on PlayStation or B on Xbox. Then head left into the Magic menu. Here you’ll see spell categories, and within them, the spells you have learned in such fields. Assign a spell to your hands by pressing either the left or right trigger button while hovering over the name (which trigger button will depend on your console as well as what version of Skyrim you’re playing – original or remastered). You can assign different spells to different hands, or the same spell to both hands.
Out of this menu, hit the trigger buttons you’ve assigned your spells to to cast them. Some spells will require you to hold these triggers to charge up the cast or maintain a stream of effect. You can cast one at a time or both, and if you have the same spell on both hands, casting with both will cause a greater effect.
To switch between spells quickly, head to your spell menu and hit Triangle/Y on your favorite ones. Out of this menu, hit the Up button on your d-pad. This will bring up your favorites menu, which can include weapons, spells, potions, and more. If you’ve saved your spells here, you can press Up, and assign new ones to your hands on the fly. Time will be paused while your favorites menu is open, so that you can switch spells in peace.
That’s all you have to know about spells in Skyrim, other than the fact that you can buy or find spell tomes around the world to teach you new tricks. Have fun, you crazy mages!
