Right towards the beginning of your time in The Quarry, Ryan and Dylan will be charging their phones in Chris Hackett’s office. While you’re waiting for them to charge up, you’ll be free to poke around the camp leader’s belongings, and upon doing so, you’ll find a creepy trap door in the floor. When you do, you’ll be given the option to go down it, or leave it. Here’s whether you should go down Mr. Hackett’s office trap door in The Quarry.
Before we proceed any further, it’s worth noting that as we’re discussing a decision you need to make, we are roaming into spoiler territory, as the consequence of this action only happens later on in the game. If you’d like to enjoy the game spoiler-free, we recommend you turn back now.
Should You Go Down the Trap Door in Mr. Hackett’s Office?
If you choose to go down when playing as Dylan towards the beginning of the game, he’ll go down, make a comment about it smelling weird and being dark and creepy, before heading back up. Nothing bad actually happens to Dylan, but as he’s climbing the ladder to get back out into Mr. Hackett’s office, he loosens one of the rungs of the ladder.
In our playthrough, this didn’t have any future consequences. While Abigail did climb up the ladder towards the end of the game when her and Emma are hiding out there, only a short cutscene played out where she managed to hang on.
We’ve yet to play through and see if other characters may climb up and down the ladder depending on the different branching paths you take, which may result in more severe consequences, but from what we can gather, this is a bit of a red herring choice and consequence, designed to have you worry about how this may impact your playthrough further down the line after Dylan’s climbed back out of the storm shelter.
If you choose not to go down the trap door, then the two characters will simply leave it and the ladder’s rung will remain intact until Abi steps on it later on in the game.
Our decision would be you’re probably best not going down the trap door as Dylan at the beginning of The Quarry. You don’t really miss out on anything if you choose not to, and if you do, you’re only setting up one of your characters for a nasty surprise when the rung of the ladder that Dylan has loosened inevitably gives way underneath them.
