Is There Co-op Multiplayer in Shenmue 3?

The short and sad answer is, no. There is no co-op multiplayer in Shenmue 3. The first two games were pure, single-player experiences that focused on world-building, story, and character development, and the same can be said for Shenmue 3 as well.

If you were hoping for some sort of local or online multiplayer experience where you could explore the open world together with a friend like in a Far Cry game, unfortunately this isn’t the game for you. Considering how focused this game is on its pre-established world, we wouldn’t hold out any hope for multiplayer eventually coming to the game via a post-launch patch either.

Of course, if that situation ever changes, we’ll be sure to update this article with the relevant information.

However, Shenmue 3 does still have a lot to offer. The melee combat is still decent, the story and characters are still compelling, and the open world is still fun to explore, even if the dialogue and writing may not be for everyone. If you’re open to enjoying a nice, single-player story, this is certainly still worth checking out.
