Sea of Thieves: How to Fix Greybeard Error and What It Is

Fixing the Greybeard Error in Sea of Thieves

UPDATE: The Sea of Thieves servers seem to have been sorted out, along with the Greybeard error, and matchmaking should work properly now.

Sea of Thieves, the new pirate open world exploration game from Rare, is finally available on Xbox One and PC. The game allows you to team up with up to three other people while exploring the open seas. However, when you boot up the game and try to set sail in a galleon, you might encounter the Greybeard error.

At the moment, it looks like the Greybeard error only shows up when you’re trying to invite friends to your party or get matchmade with other players online. The game will try to fix you up with other people before giving you an error message. This is a server error on Rare’s side, and they’ve already tweeted saying that they’re working on it.

In the meantime, however, you can still get into the game if you’re willing to make a few sacrifices. Instead of sailing in a galleon with other pirates, you can sail alone in a sloop. This does mean that you’ll have no crew, and you’ll only have yourself to rely on. This will bypass the matchmaking process, and put you straight into the game. At the moment, this seems to be the only fix, but we’ll keep you updated if things change.
