How to Get Ether in Returnal

There are a few different ways to get Ether in Returnal, but their availability will be determined by whether or not you’re playing in online mode.

One way is to examine and avenge Deceased Scouts. This will see you pitted against the enemy that killed them, and if you succeed, you’ll receive some ether for your trouble. It’s worth noting, though, that you won’t be able to find Deceased Scouts unless you’re playing with the Online Mode active. This is because the Scouts are the bodies of other players who have lost runs, and they won’t appear for you while you’re playing offline.

Another method is to complete the daily challenges available at your ship. As the name implies, these are specific challenges posed that change on a daily basis. Completing them will net you a certain amount of Ether, while failing them won’t have any real drawbacks. Again though, this method will require you to be playing in Online Mode.

The third and final method is to play the game normally. Ether has a chance of appearing in any run you play, whether you’re in Online or Offline Mode. However, it’s not guaranteed to appear like with the two methods laid out above, so you’ll be at the mercy of RNG.

What You Can Do With Ether

As for what Ether is used for in Returnal, it’s incredibly useful.

By using Ether on items afflicted with Malignancy, you can remove their negative effects and enjoy their bonuses without issue. This applies to pretty much everything that can be affected by Malignancy too, including gear, containers, and items.
