Like most other roguelikes, Returnal‘s core gameplay loop is designed around a permadeath system of sorts. Once you die, you lose items and weapons tied to that specific run. However, you may have heard that some of your gear remains with you even after death, which has left you wondering: What carries over in each loop in Returnal?
We were left wondering the same thing, and after some experimentation, we have the answers you’re looking for. Read on to find out what you can count on to be there when you wake up from your latest defeat.
What Carries Over From Each Loop in Returnal
As it currently stands, there are only a few types of items that don’t carry over with you after dying in Returnal.
These items include any and all weapons that you picked up during your run; any power-ups you found, such as Silphium Resin; and any parasites that were attached to your body and augmenting your abilities.
On the plus side, this means that most everything else will come along with you into your next loop. Items like your melee weapon, traversal gadgets, Ether, and Artifacts you’ve collected will all still be at your disposal.
Do Boss Keys Carry Over?
It’s also worth noting that Boss Keys also carry over in Returnal.
This means you won’t have to re-beat any of the game’s most challenging adversaries after you’ve defeated them. You’ll be able to head straight to the next Biome, sans any headaches caused by repetitive challenges and gameplay.
