How to Find Your Lost Hat if You Lose it in Red Dead Redemption 2

Fancy hats are all the rage in the world of Red Dead Redemption 2. Everyone from outlaws to shopkeeper are rocking some kind of cap, and if not wearing one just looks odd. It’s very easy though to lose your hat, especially if you’re engaging in some rough and tumble activities. Here’s how to find your hat if you lose it in Red Dead Redemption 2.

When you first lose your hat, simply look on the ground if you have a free second. It shouldn’t be far, and it will be marked on your map with a hat icon. You should see it flashing a bit in white, too. Makes it easier for you to locate it on the ground this way.

Walk on over to it, and press and hold Square if you’re on PS4 or X if you’re on Xbox One to recover it. Easy peasy. Arthur will pick up the hat and put it back on.

You can also swap out your cap in this matter, by the way, if you find another on the ground you’d rather wear.

What about times when, you’re in a mission, and it goes flying off and it’s too dangerous to recover, you might be asking?

You can still return to where you lost it if you want, and it should still be there. But if it’s long gone, don’t fret, there’s another way to easily get your hat.

Head over to your horse and look through the horse’s inventory. Check out the Items section and select the part of the wheel that opens up where there’s a hat icon. You can replace your cap there, right from your horse.

If you somehow don’t have access to your horse to replace your hat or you maybe didn’t save the one you wanted to wear, you’re going to need to go to a wardrobe.

Simply return to one either at camp or in a hotel room, and any hat that you lawfully possess or obtained via an event, will be available for you to put back on from there.

The only hats that are gone forever are the ones you pick up off of dead bodies that can’t be saved.

Finally, if you want to make sure you have easy access to your caps no matter the circumstances, you can keep a stash of three that are available in your horse’s inventory.

Your default hat, Arthur’s Gambler one, is always there. And from your Wardrobe, you can assign up to two more to join it by saving them onto the horse.

From the Wardrobe simply look for the one you want to assign, and then press Square or X to assign it to your steed. If it’s already on that satchel, it will give you the option to remove it instead.

From that point on, when you access your horse’s items, your stash will be available from that menu, provided you’re near your horse.
