Outer Worlds: Is It Open World? Answered

outer worlds, open world

The Outer Worlds looks and plays very much like Obsidian’s acclaimed Fallout: New Vegas, which launched way back in 2010. Its first-person role-playing design and emphasis on branching dialog are hallmark features both share in common, but what about level design? Is Outer Worlds open world? Here’s what you need to know.

Is the Outer Worlds Open World? Answered

The Outer Worlds is a large game made up of several different planets, each of which features a large sandbox environment for players to explore. But to travel inbetween these planets you’ll need to board your space ship, and that means sitting through a loading screen.

In this way, then, Outer Worlds is not really a true open world game in the same fashion as a game like New Vegas, a game in which the entire story line takes place on a single map.

That being said, there are still plenty of large planets to explore and none of them are walled off in any way; you can explore them at your leisure. Think of The Outer Worlds as several small open worlds.

Each of these small open worlds ranges in size, but some of them are fairly meaty and contain different biomes and various points of interest. Notably, just as in Fallout games, you’ll have to sit through loading screens as you go from, say, a township to an outdoor environment. However, there aren’t loading screens to enter a shop or small building, as there are in Skyrim.

That should be everything you need to know about whether Outer Worlds is open world. For more useful tips and guides on the game, be sure to search Twinfinite, or head to our guide wiki.
