Opening Purple Chests in Octopath Traveler
As you make your way across the continent of Orsterra in Octopath Traveler, you will eventually come across purple chests that are locked. These can be found in the overworld, as you’re traveling between cities, and there are usually one or two of them in every dungeon as well. When you approach them, the game will inform you that none of your active party members are able to open it, and that’s because Therion is the only character in Octopath Traveler who can open these chests.
As a Thief, Therion has a Pick Lock ability that allows him to open all these locked purple chests. All you need to do is have him in your active party, and you’ll be able to open them like any regular chest. These are usually worth the effort, too, as they’ll contain free pieces of gear (so you don’t have to spend money buying more equipment) or extra cash for you to spend. Even if Therion isn’t in your starting lineup, we recommend revisiting dungeons with him in your party just so you can open up those purple chests and get the rewards.
Another important thing to note is that this ability is exclusive to Therion himself, not the Thief class. This means that even after unlocking Thief as a secondary class for your other characters, equipping them with it won’t give them the Pick Lock ability to open the locked chests. No matter what, Therion needs to be in your party if you want to open them. It’s a little annoying, but there’s no way around it. And that’s pretty much all you need to know about those mysterious purple chests around the world.
