Before you milk/harvest materials from an animal in No Man’s Sky, you need to tame them. At first, when you approach them, they’ll just run off if you don’t have something they might want.

When near a creature, scan it to reveal its bait preference. Then, to get the bait it wants, you need to go to a Nutrient Processor to craft it.

You’ll need to find and harvest the materials required first, but they change depending on the type of bait, which changes depending on the type of creature you’re trying to milk.

If you’ve not already got access to a Nutrient Processor, we have heard that you can get the blueprint for it from an NPC in the Nexus hub. Just head there by pressing down on the d-pad (console/gamepad) or X (PC) to bring up the quick menu, then selecting the Space Anomaly option to summon the Space Anomaly.

Once you’ve located the NPC and bought it, you’ll then be able to construct it craft the bait you need to give the animal you’re trying to tame.

How to Milk Creatures in No Man’s Sky Beyond

Once you’re back at the animal you’re trying to harvest milk from, you’ll need to offer it the bait that it wants. Pretty soon, it’ll become your friend and you’ll be able to interact with it.

One of the options you’ll see is to harvest it. Some animals offer milk, which is what we’re after here, but others offer different materials instead. Simply select it and you’ll be ready to milk.

You could also place a feeder nearby to stop them running off once they’re tamed and you could even place a harvesting node to milk them without you having to do it manually.
