Tron: Legacy
Movies Like Ready Player One
Like with Ready Player One, Tron: Legacy takes plenty of cues from virtual reality. The movie is a direct sequel to the 1989 film, following a new protagonist named Sam Flynn – Kevin Flynn’s son.
Sam looks into his father’s mysterious disappearance and eventually comes across a virtual reality world filled with gladiatorial games and deadly programs.
Sam eventually stumbles across his father and his confidant, Quorra, and the three set off on a perilous adventure through the cyber universe.
All the while, a dangerous program called CLU will stop at nothing to prevent their escape and dominate both the digital and real world.
Filled with stunning visuals and intense fight scenes, Tron: Legacy is definitely worth looking into if you loved Ready Player One.
Zathura: A Space Adventure
Movies Like Ready Player One
Considered a spiritual successor to the first Jumanji back in the day, Zathura: A Space Adventure follows two brothers who stumble across a mechanical board game that flings them into outer space.
The craziness doesn’t end there, however, as each move they make provides a different thrill-seeking challenge.
To reach home, the boys must learn to cooperate and finish the game together.
Zany space adventures aside, Zathura brilliantly displays the real meaning behind brotherhood and learning how to put up with your siblings, despite how annoying they can get.
That being said, this is one of the best films to bond over with your friends and family if you’ve enjoyed Ready Player One.
Wreck-It Ralph
Movies Like Ready Player One
Being a villain sure isn’t easy, especially if you’re in a video game. Getting your ass handed over to you time and time again, even if it’s your job, does get pretty tiring.
Wreck-It Ralph just longs to be accepted in his video game, Fix-It Felix Jr, but nobody ever likes the bad guy. So, after constantly being mistreated and unloved, Ralph decides to go rogue and leave and explore the other games in his local arcade.
During his trip, he meets a troublemaking glitch named Vanellope von Schweetz who seems to be the one who can finally teach him what it means to be the “good guy.”
Gamers are in for a treat as the film is filled with plenty of classic video game characters and references. On top of that, Wreck-It Ralph comes with a sweet story that’s sure to melt anyone’s heart.
Pixels
Movies Like Ready Player One
Man vs. alien takes on a whole new meeting in Pixels. Back in 1982, 13-year-old Sam Brenner takes part in a video game competition after discovering that he can master games by spotting patterns.
When footage of the competition is sealed in a time capsule, the clip is launched into space and reaches the hands of aliens who interpreted video games as a challenge from Earth.
Fast forward years later, and the aliens issue their own challenge against the plant by using data found in various classic video games.
It’s up to Sam and his old arcade pals to save the Earth from the video game alien invasion.
Needless to say, Pixels and Ready Player One each have their fair share of video game references and Easter eggs.
Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over
Movies Like Ready Player One
Okay, so this is a blast from the past. Chances are, you’ve probably already heard of Spy Kids – the two kids who discover their parents are spies, and then they become spies themselves and fight those human hand… things.
Weird times. The third film continues their undercover adventures, with Carmen Cortez having gone missing after her mission went wrong. In an attempt to find her, Juni Cortez returns to the spy organization to enlist on a new mission and find his sister.
His search leads him to a virtual reality-based video game, Game Over, where players must beat the “unwinnable” fifth level to escape. Carmen and Juni must pass through death-defying stages filled with different obstacles and put a stop to the evil villain, Toymaker.
While Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over might not hold a candle to Ready Player One, it’s still interesting to see the difference between how we view virtual reality between then and now.
