Understanding the basic mechanics of Monster Hunter Rise will take you far in the game. However, it isn’t always clear about how to execute different actions, or if you can even use them in the first place. As such, you wouldn’t be blamed for having no clue as to how to block in Monster Hunter Rise.
That’s why we’ve compiled everything you’ll need to know into this guide. By the end, you should know how to intercept incoming damage, when the best times to guard are, and what can keep you from utilizing this mechanic.
How to Block in Monster Hunter Rise
To start, it’s worth mentioning that you can only block with certain weapons; specifically, the Gunlance, Sword and Shield, Great Sword, and Charge Blade.
Every other weapon in the game won’t allow you to guard while wielding them, instead offering special abilities you can use instead.
If you have one of these four weapons equipped though, blocking couldn’t be easier. Simply press and hold down the ZR Button. So long as you hold down the button and have stamina, you’ll be able to reduce the incoming damage from monster attacks.
When You Should Block
Of course, there are some situations that are better than others for blocking in Monster Hunter Rise.
If you’re up against a stronger enemy, it’s wise to be selective about when you guard. This is because they’ll likely be able to deplete your stamina quickly if you over-rely on defense. If that happens, you’ll be stunned and open to enemy attacks until your stamina starts to regenerate.
Likewise, blocking can be detrimental to the condition of your weapon. If your armament is on its last leg, it will likely break if you keep using it to guard against incoming attacks. This can leave you wide-open while you try to repair it; or worse, if you’re out of Whetstones, with next to no chance of taking down your prey.
To that end, be mindful of these factors when considering whether or not to block. It can be tricky at first, but with time, you’ll be able to anticipate when and when not to rely on this defensive mechanic.
