Minecraft Obsidian is an incredibly useful building material and is a key component for creating a Nether Portal. Due to its incredibly durable structure, Obsidian can also make a good defensive block for making a base that cannot be destroyed by griefers. It can also be used defensively against the Ender Dragon as it cannot be destroyed by its firey breath. Here’s how to break Obsidian in Minecraft.
Breaking Obsidian in Minecraft
Obsidian can be broken with a Diamond Pickaxe or a Netherite Pickaxe. Using either of these items will break Obsidian down quickly and allow you to collect the blocks.
You can break Obsidian by using pickaxes made of other materials, but this will take longer, and also not drop Obsidian blocks once they’ve been completely broken. As such, we recommend using a Diamond or Netherite Pickaxe for breaking Obsidian as it’s faster, and you can then re-use the blocks for something like a Nether Portal.
We’ve broken down just how long it takes to break Obsidian with each type of pickaxe in Miencraft:
- Hand – 250
- Wood – 125
- Stone – 62.5
- Iron – 41.7
- Gold – 20.85
- Diamond – 9.4
- Netherite – 8.35
As we noted above, Obsidian is a very strong material and cannot be destroyed by the Ender Dragon. It isn’t flammable, nor does it catch fire from lava. It also has a Hardness stat of 50, and a Blast Resistance of 1,200 making it one of the toughest materials in the game.
