There are a ton of different items and materials that players can used for their crafting needs in Minecraft. While the likes of wood and stone are easy to obtain, others are far more difficulty. Enter, Minecraft’s Nautilus Shell, an underwater-themed objective added as part of the Aquatic Update. Here’s how to get Nautilus Shells in Minecraft and what they’re used for.
Getting Nautilus Shells
There are currently two ways you can get Nautilus Shells, and both of them require players to head for water.
Fishing
The first method is to simply go fishing. You’ll need a fishing rod to do this, which can be crafted by combining three sticks with two pieces of string. Once you’ve got a fishing rod, simply equip it and walk over to the edge of water. Cast the rod in, and cross your fingers that lady luck is on your side.
Nautilus Shells are a rare drop from fishing and as such it can take you a good few hours to get one.
Increasing Your Chances of Getting Nautilus Shells from Fishing
While the drop rate tends to be pretty low when normally fishing, you can better your chances of pulling up a Nautilus Shell with your fishing rod by raising your Luck of the Sea enchantment level.
With each level that you increase this enchantment by, the chance of getting one of these shells is also raised.
Defeating Drowned
The other way to get Nautilus Shells is to dive into water yourself and battle it out with the Drowned lurking under the surface. Drowned can naturally spawn in bodies of water, or are the result of a normal zombie falling into water.
A Drowned has a 3% chance in Minecraft Java Edition and an 8% chance in the Bedrock Edition of spawning with a Nautilus Shell in its hand. If it does, this will be dropped once it’s died.
What Are Nautilus Shells Used For?
Nautilus Shells are required to craft Conduits. You’ll need eight Nautilus Shells and one Heart of the Sea to craft a Conduit.
A Conduit, once activated, gives all players within a set radius of 32-96 blocks the “Conduit Power” effect. This stops the breath meter from decreasing, grants underwater night vision, and increases underwater mining speed.
Conduits also damage hostile mobs within a smaller 8-block radius surrounding them. They also emit light when placed underwater whether they’re activated or not. They have a light level of 15, which is the highest in the game.
