In Minecraft, some people spend their days building castles, fighting creepers, and slaying dragons. That’s fun and all but there are others who spend their time in simpler ways, farming the land as it grows, sorting their produce and living a quiet life in their biome of choice. If you’re more into the second lifestyle, you’re going to want a hopper to sort your goods. Here’s how to make a hopper in Minecraft.
Making a Hopper in Minecraft
Part of the crafting experience in Minecraft is organization, and while you’re free to develop whatever method you’d like, you likely won’t come across a more useful creation than a hopper.
It’s essentially a drop bucket that will automatically sort and transfer items in and out of containers based on what the item is. Before we go over how to make a hopper, let’s talk about how they work.
How They Work
With a hopper installed, you’ll see that below it is a moving slide of sorts that will work to drop an item in the appropriate area. Let’s go over an example of how a hopper might work.
If you have a hopper and a bin under it for gold and another under it for silver, you can drop silver and gold into the hopper and it will place the gold and silver in the appropriate bin. It’s essentially an automatic material organizer and it can be used with basically any kind of material found in Minecraft.
Now that we know how they work, let’s talk about how to actually make one.
How to Make a Hopper
To make a hopper, you’re going to need five iron ingots and a chest. With these materials in tow, open the crafting menu and you should see a 3×3 grid. Place an iron ingot in the top left corner and top right corner.
Place an iron ingot under both of the ingots in the corners. Place an ingot in the bottom middle space and right above that, in the middle square of the crafting area, place the chest.
You should see that this creates a black tornado-looking item — this is your hopper.
