The Last of Us 2 has an impressive arsenal of weapons for you to choose from, but they become all the better when you factor in their many upgrades. How to Fully Upgrade Every Weapon in The Last of Us 2

Upgrading every weapon in The Last of Us 2 is fairly easy to do. The only real drawback is that it’s time consuming.

To start, you’ll need to collect as many bits of scrap metal as you can. It can be scavenged from different areas throughout the game the same way that crafting components and other items can. The amount of scrap you have is the only real limit to how much you can upgrade weapons at any given time, and as such should be collected the second you see it.

Likewise, you’ll need to keep an eye out for workbenches and use them whenever possible. Found sporadically along the main story path and hidden in side areas, these are the only places you’ll be able to upgrade weapons at.

By doing these things, you can maximize how often you can upgrade your weapons and make steady progress toward unlocking every upgrade in the game. There are 34 upgrades in all to unlock, and they’ll cost you anywhere between 30 and 100 bits of scrap to carry out.

Can You Unlock Every Upgrade in One Playthrough?

However, even if you find every possible bit of scrap and every workbench, you won’t be able to fully upgrade every weapon in The Last of us 2 in a single playthrough.

Instead, you’ll need to play the game again one or two more times via the New Game Plus mode, which allows you to carry over all of your enhancements and continue plugging away at the ones you don’t yet have.

It’s a bit of a bummer, but also to be expected. The game’s weapons are substantially stronger when fully upgraded, and as such Naughty Dog most likely designed the game to prevent players from becoming too overpowered in their initial playthroughs of the game.

Hopefully this cleared up how to fully upgrade every weapon in The Last of Us 2. For more on the game, check out our guide wiki. It has tons of guides on a variety of topics from how to beat the Rat King to whether the game has multiple endings.
