Cell is in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, but probably not in the way you’re expecting. Magenta, the new leader of the Red Ribbon Army employs Dr. Hedo -the grandson of Cell’s original creator Dr. Gero – to create a new and improved Cell Max.

Cell Max spends most of the film in a chamber and is considered by Dr. Hedo to be far too dangerous. Magenta, however, views Cell Max as the key to securing the Red Ribbon Army’s dominance and seizing control over the world.

Cell Max is released early by a dying Magenta after Piccolo and Gohan begin to overwhelm the Red Ribbon Army’s forces. Those hoping to see a return of the sadistic and calculated Perfect Cell may be disappointed as Cell Max is essentially a mindless Kaiju-style clone of the original. Dameon Clarke and Cell’s original voice actor Norio Wakamoto return in both the English and Japanese dubs but they don’t get to do much with the character. Except scream. A lot.

Cell Max is said to be vastly more powerful than Perfect Cell and is able to withstand the combined forces of the Z Fighters and a self-destructive attack from Gamma 2. Despite the increase in power, Cell Max is unable to regenerate and cannot absorb other androids.

Cell Max is finally put down thanks to the combined efforts of Piccolo and Gohan who is able to exploit the weakness in his head with a supercharged Special Beam Cannon. Cell Max is completely obliterated making a return pretty unlikely, although Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama has teased that if Cell Max had been completed he would surpass even Broly. Could we see a Perfect Cell Max when the Dragon Ball Super anime returns next year?
