Injustice 2: How to Play Sub-Zero

How to Play Sub-Zero in Injustice 2

Recommended Videos

Sub-Zero, who many of you will recognize from Mortal Kombat, is the newest fighter to jump into the fray in Injustice 2. He brings along a whole move-set full of icy attacks and quick combos that make him an absolutely devastating opponent to deal with at close range. He’s also a solid defensive fighter, with abilities centered around pushing others back and allowing him to catch a quick breather during sticky situations. While he is a solid option to play as though, Sub-Zero can be a bit tricky to use if you don’t know how to properly play to his strengths.

As we mentioned above, Sub-Zero is a nightmare in close-ranged combat. He’s not the fastest with his fists, especially when compared to the likes of Red Hood, Catwoman, or Cheetah, but his combos are all about mixing up heights, pushing players, and taking advantage of cryomancy to stun and sometimes even freeze opponents. With that being said, you’ll want to be aggressive when playing as this character. Sure, you have your ranged Ice Ball attack which can stun opponents (or freeze them with a Meter Burn), but it flies very slowly and at long range is easily avoided or simply blocked. All of the other cold abilities in the move set require you to be within one or two paces of your opponent or have them approaching you, so staying at the opposite end of the screen from whoever you’re fighting won’t do you any favors. If you’re playing against anyone even remotely competent, they’ll punish you to no end. Plus, characters like Dead Shot, Aquaman, and Black Adam will dominate Sub-Zero in the distance game without even breaking a sweat.

The moves that will become your closest friends when playing with Sub-Zero are Ice Burst, Slide, and Polar Puncture, as well as Sub-Zero’s special power, Ice Klone. These will allow you to stun and deal great damage to opponents as you keep the pressure on. Ice Klone, in particular, is very useful against overly aggressive opponents. Your clone stands in your last position, freezing anyone foolish enough to touch it, which opens them up to combos, stage transitions, interactions, and other ways to emerge victorious.

If you find yourself under pressure, either from a faster character or another Sub-Zero, Ice Burst creates distance and can interrupt attacks. Getting used to being close to your opponent is the key to coming out on top every time. Sub-Zero is not for those who get scared when fists are thrown at them; he excels in tough situations.

So remember, play it close to your opponent with Sub-Zero, close-range is the sweet spot. When in mid-range, use Slide or your Ice Ball to create a way to move closer. You always want to be close and taking advantage of your Klone and Burst. Keep this in mind and you’ll find yourself being a Lin Kuei master in no time.
