Whether you’re playing on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, chances are you’ve run into the ‘Finishing Things Up’ error after a fairly large update or game download. After the files have been downloaded, your console takes a moment to, what we can only assume is, checking all the files are there and that there are no errors. The problem is, more often than not, the ‘Finishing Things Up’ progress bar just stops moving, and there’s no sign of life that it’s finished.
What Causes the Finishing Things Up Error on Xbox Consoles?
It appears as though the error mainly occurs with larger update files and game installations. However, it’s only ever triggered for us when the console is in standby mode and finished the download of the update or game itself.
If the console is powered on when your download reaches 100%, your Xbox will make its way through the ‘Finishing Things Up’ process and complete, clearing it from your download queue.
How to Fix Stuck on ‘Finishing Things Up’ Error on Xbox
The easiest and fastest way to fix the ‘Finishing Things Up’ error is to restart your Xbox. This is done by pressing and holding the Xbox button on your controller and then selecting ‘Restart Console.’
It’s worth noting that you need to do this, rather than just turning your Xbox off and on again. If you just turn the console off and on as usual, the update or game’s ‘Finishing Things Up’ progress will still be frozen.
If this doesn’t resolve the issue, you can also press the Menu button on the game’s tile in your ‘Queue’ and select ‘Cancel Installation,’ however, keep in mind that this will likely uninstall the game entirely from your console and you’ll have to redownload it, so only use this as a last resort.
