The second level in Hitman 3 is one of the series’ best, dropping you into a stately home in England while a murder investigation is going on around you. Thankfully, you can put your detective hat on, literally, to try and solve the mystery yourself. If you’re struggling to follow it, here’s everything you need to know about how to solve the murder mystery in Hitman 3’s Dartmoor level.
Before anything else, you’ll need to make sure that your starting place is set as the default option for the mission, which is the house’s entrance. Then, you’ll also want coins with you and it doesn’t really matter what your starting costume is.
How to Solve Murder Mystery in Hitman 3 (Dartmoor Level)
Becoming the Detective
You’ll want to follow a Mission Story called Means, Motive, and Opportunity, which you’ll get access to as you reach the front gate. Keep tabs on the detective that Alexa Carlisle has hired to look into the death of Zachary and follow him up to the house.
As you move, you’ll need to take out a gardener or security guard to get close to the house and the detective. Thankfully, there are loads of bushes outside, so hide in them, throw a coin close to you, and take out whoever comes close.
Then, either kill him before he enters the house if you find the chance to, or go through an open window and look for him when he’s on his own. Unless you’re dressed as staff, you won’t be allowed inside. Even guards and gardeners will be compromised if they go inside. Once you’ve taken him out, hold A if you’re on Xbox (X on PlayStation) to take his outfit.
How to Start the Dartmoor Murder Mystery Investigation
Then, you’ll be prompted to meet Mrs. Carlisle and the family’s butler, Mr Fenersby, the latter of which will offer to take you to look at the crime scene and start the investigation.
You’ll find some clues in the bedroom with your camera, so look around at the bed and surrounding area.
You’ll then need to go back to Mr Fenersby, who’ll give you more information about the family and ask you to start questioning all of the suspects.
Question the Murder Suspects – Hitman 3 Murder Mystery
Do note that we’ll start getting into proper spoilers from this point, so just be aware.
You’ll find all of them on the bottom floor of the house, in the various large rooms looking out into the garden. Some will stay in one place, such as Gregory on the sofa in the screenshot below, whereas a couple of others will move between rooms. Just run up them and start a conversation.
Your job is to ask them questions, look around, and figure out who has alibis that you can confirm.
Ask them all three questions and you’ll find out a few things, with a couple being written off as innocent. Gregory and Edward went to a hotel and pub the night before, so it couldn’t be them.
You can also talk to Rosie, one of the family’s maids, who’s in the kitchen area being consoled by her superior. She confirms Patrick’s story about him spending the night with her, which clears him of any role in the murder you’re trying to solve.
You’ll also need to look around the two other named bedrooms on the second floor to absolve some of the other suspects, as well as break into Mr Fenersby’s office.
You can find a crowbar just by the trucks outside the window by the door to the office, or down by the greenhouse. You’ll also want a crowbar for later on, so be sure to grab one whenever you see it and put it into your inventory.
Inside, you’ll find that the butler helped make the death look like an accident, but didn’t do the killing himself. You’re given the choice to frame him and tell Carlisle that he’s the killer, even though you know he’s not.
Inside the room you’ll find a master key for the house, so grab that to make getting around the house a little easier.
As long as you’ve found all the clues in the house and spoken to everyone who’s relevant, you’ll be able to head to the greenhouse, break in, analyse the book by the chemistry kit, and work out that it’s Emma who is the killer.
You can go to the greenhouse earlier than that if you want, but if it’s before you’ve found all the clues, you won’t know for sure that it’s Emma.
Solving the Murder Mystery & Killing Alexa Carlisle
With the knowledge that Emma is the killer, you can then go and tell the butler that you’ve solved the murder mystery and he’ll take you to see Carlisle on the top floor of the mansion.
You’ll sit down and speak to her, telling her what happened the night before and revealing that you’ve discovered that Emma’s also her niece and Alexa killed her brother (Montgomery) a long time ago.
You can bargain that information for the file in her safe, which you need to complete the mission. She’ll agree to give it to you and you can grab it from the safe.
She’ll then ask for some privacy and head out onto the balcony. You can follow her and she’ll be out there on her own, so you can kill her however you like. Pushing her off the edge is nice and easy, but you can do what you like. The guards inside shouldn’t see you, unless you make a load of noise.
You’ll then be able to walk out of the house without a care in the world, escaping however possible.
