Android 7.0, otherwise known as Nougat, has started rolling out to Android smartphones recently. The new OS brings a bunch of new features, tweaks, and improvements to security, as well as offering a slight tweak to the design.
With so many additions for users to get to grips with, many will be wondering when they’ll be able to get their hands on it. Unfortunately, just like other Android software updates, Nougat will be available on your device depending on your manufacturer.
Samsung: Unfortunately, the Korean manufacturer has never been known for getting the Android updates out quickly and are often one of the slowest. You can expect to receive Nougat on your Samsung device in around five months time from its launch. In other words, near the start of 2017. It should be noted, also, that not all Samsung devices will be able to run Android 7.0. The Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, their S6 predecessors, and the Note 5 are likely the phones that will receive the update. The newly released Galaxy Note 7 will likely receive the update before all of these, however.
LG: If you own an LG phone, you’re likely to get Android 7.0 not too far behind Google devices. If the release of Android 6.0 is anything to go by, LG will start having 7.0 out on its handsets within two months of its release. Of course, if you don’t want to wait that long and are due an upgrade on your phone, the V20 is due to release in September and will be the first phone to be running 7.0 out of the box.
Sony: Much like Samsung, Sony managed to get the 6.0 update out to their devices within five months of it being released by Google. Based on this, you can expect a similar wait this year.
Motorola: Even though it’s no longer owned by Google, Motorola owners are more than likely going to end up getting Nougat much earlier than other manufacturers. The Moto Pure X Edition got its first update to 6.0 just one month after stock Android devices received it, so this definitely bodes well for Nougat. It should be noted, however, that Lenovo now owns Motorola and it has to prove its capabilities when dealing with the rollout of new software updates.
HTC: Much like Motorola, HTC had its One M9 and A9 devices running Marshmallow within two months of it being rolled out by Google. If this is anything to go by, HTC should have the update rolled out to existing devices within the next two months, and their next flagship smartphone should be running it out of the box just as the HTC 10 did in April this year.
Xiaomi: Being the largest smartphone manufacturer in Xiaomi, it’s likely that any Xiaomi smartphones should be pretty quick to have Nougat rolling out. Unfortunately, the manufacturer had an issue releasing 6.0 on current devices, leading to a six-month delay in the OS update coming to the Mi 4, Mi 3, and Mi Note. Only time will tell if it suffers a similar issue this time around.
Android One: Just like Nexus devices, Android One phones run stock Android, meaning that Google handles the firmware rollouts. Therefore, with a bit of luck, you’ll be able to get the 7.0 update within the next couple of weeks. The only slow down will be the OTAs to all devices, but Android One owners should be far ahead of the curve regardless.
