Remothered: Tormented Fathers
A spiritual successor the to Clock Tower series, Remothered: Tormented Fathers is an eerie survival horror game about a woman named Rosemary Reed who spearheads the investigation on a missing girl named Celeste. Her search leads her to the home of a man named Richard Felton, where strange things begin to happen as she delves deeper into the unsolved crimes and familial feuds.
As you explore Felton’s mansion, you must find clues and solve puzzles that lead you deeper to the truth about Celeste and Richard Felton. Remothered: Tormented Fathers doesn’t rely on first-person horror like Resident Evil 7, but mixes in plenty of survival horror elements. Players are constantly followed by stalkers wherever they go, always leaving you on edge.
Players can use weapons or run and hide, giving you different options when confronting your stalker. Remothered: Tormented Fathers also boasts seamless exploration with its lack of loading screens. If you’re looking for classic survival horror found in Resident Evil 7, Remothered: Tormented Fathers is a hidden gem that’s worth exploring.

Condemned: Criminal Origins
While the Condemned series never really picked up as much popularity, they’re still great examples of creepy horror games. Criminal Origins focuses more on puzzle-solving, as players take control of an investigator named Ethan Thomas who’s on the search for a mysterious Serial Killer X. At the same time, he also has to deal with the rising lunacy of the public in Metro City.
Condemned: Criminal Origins shares the first-person scares found in Resident Evil 7, although it leans more into combat than survival. Guns are overpowered but scarce, urging players to use fists and other melee weapons to take down opponents instead.
What makes Criminal Origins so great is its dynamic enemy AI. Your foes will literally jump out at you when you least expect it, and they will hide when they’re cornered. These enemies will jump out of concealed areas and attack you relentlessly, even going so far as to pulling off feints to let your guard down.
Resident Evil 7 could have actually learned a thing or two about Condemned’s AI, though there’s no denying that both games are utterly terrifying.

Alien: Isolation
Alien: Isolation is another horror game that’s all about hiding and outwitting your pursuers. The game is set 15 years after the original Alien film and centers around Ellen Ripley’s daughter, Amanda. After a rescue mission goes wrong, Amanda must survive alone in a ruined space fleet that had been ransacked by alien creatures.
This horror game definitely lives up to its name, as it does a great job of making the player feel completely isolated in space. Unlike Resident Evil 7, there’s no one to turn to or even talk to for advice. You’re tasked with solving puzzles on your own while silently avoiding any stalkers that want to kill you.
For the most part, you’re left with no weapons and have to rely heavily on stealth. While you do get a weapon as you progress, you’re pretty much stuck with the feeling of helplessness when you’re hiding behind crates and doors.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent
First-person horror games hadn’t really boomed up until Amnesia: The Dark Descent. This game has left a big mark on the genre with its heavy emphasis on psychological horror. Here, you play as a young man named Daniel who had completely lost his memories and awakens in a mysterious castle.
Interestingly enough, he stumbles across a note written to himself about how he deliberately erased his own memory along with orders to descend the castle. Along the way, Daniel stumbles across deformed creatures who chase him. You have no means of fighting back and are forced into hiding.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent adds a sanity meter that decreases whenever Daniel looks at the monsters for too long or when hiding in the dark. Upon reaching a certain point, players will begin to see and hear hallucinations.
It’s a unique and believable twist for a horror game, especially considering how most protagonists don’t even bat an eye when they see horrific monsters. While it doesn’t have the same combat as Resident Evil 7, they both have the same lingering dread and do emphasis on psychological aspects of horror.

The Evil Within
The Evil Within is another survival horror game that delves deep into nightmares. The game’s protagonist, Sebastian, gets pulled into a distorted world filled with horrific creatures and distorted memories.
Together with his partners, the three of them must navigate through the bizarre ordeal and learn the truth of their ongoing investigation. Players are armed with a variety of different weapons, although resources are scarce.
The Evil Within shared the same unsettling vibes with Resident Evil 7, with both games relying on atmospheric horror to scare players. It’s also worth noting that this game was created by Shinji Mikami, one of the pioneers of the Resident Evil series.

Outlast
From its heart-pounding chase scenes to the disturbing enemies, Outlast is another great horror game done in the same vein as Resident Evil 7. You play as a journalist named Miles Upshur who had received a mysterious tip regarding inhumane experiments being conducted at a mental hospital.
Upon arriving, however, you’re ambushed and trapped by the deformed patients in the asylum. Armed with nothing but a camcorder, you’re forced to find your way out of the hellhole with nothing but your sense of direction and insane parkour skills. There isn’t any combat in Outlast, but you can use hiding spaces to avoid enemies.
Moreover, you will also have to use your camera to see through dark areas. You can collect your batteries to keep your camcorder topped up, but there’s nothing else you can really do otherwise.
Outlast is just as gory as Resident Evil 7, featuring some pretty gnarly scenes during your time in the asylum. Outlast also makes use of jump scares to catch you off guard or alert you if there are any nearby enemies. Despite some of its cheap scare tactics, Outlast and its sequel is still a great option for Resident Evil 7 fans.

Silent Hill
Silent Hill is turning 20 this year, but we still see the impact its left in the horror genre. Both Resident Evil 7 and Silent Hill start off the same way, with Harry Mason on the search for his daughter, Cheryl, after the two had been mysteriously separated in a car accident. Meanwhile, Ethan Winters has been looking for his missing wife, leading him to a house full of psychotic people and infected monsters.
Both are also survival horror games, except that Silent Hill doesn’t really do viral outbreaks. The game is more about confronting your fears and thoughts, which take physical forms in Silent Hill. Harry’s plagued by all sorts of terrifying creatures on his search for his daughter, and there are plenty of puzzles he has to work through to reach her.
Konami’s canceled project, Silent Hills, also plays a lot similarly to Resident Evil 7 with its first-person perspective and a lingering sense of dread around every corner. While we never did get Silent Hills, Resident Evil 7 feels a lot like its spiritual successor in many ways.

Fatal Frame
Fatal Frame opens with the similar premise as Resident Evil 7, with a girl named Miku on the search for her lost sister. This eventually leads her to a haunted mansion, where she begins to unravel the mystery behind some sort of dark ritual.
Since the place is haunted, the mansion is teeming with all sorts of ghosts who will stop at nothing to kill Miku. Instead of guns and pipes, players must use a camera to capture images of these spirits and send them away. Players are basically forced to look at these ghosts since the better the picture, the more damage you deal.
Aside from combat, you must also solve puzzles by using the camera to unlock clues and other useful hints. Fatal Frame’s story leans more into Japanese folklore and drifts from viral outbreaks and zombies. Still, Fatal Frame still shares the same survival horror elements with its scarce healing supplies and film scattered around the map.
