Fortnite Chapter 2 Upgrading Weapons Explained

Before we dive into exactly how you upgrade weapons, it’s worth pointing out exactly what doing so means. As part of Fortnite Chapter 2’s new additions, players can now find upgrade machines that are seemingly scattered throughout the map.

One can be found in Craggy Cliffs for example, while another can be found over on the beach by Power Plant.

These machines will enable you to increase the rarity of a chosen weapon by one. For example, you can turn a common weapon (grey) into uncommon (green), or a green into a rare (blue).

By doing so, your weapon’s stats will then be improved across the board, allowing you to drop enemies with greater precision and in fewer hits.

To upgrade weapons, you’ll first need to find one of these upgrade machines. We’ve yet to pinpoint all of the locations, but we’ve got a list going down below:

  • Craggy Cliffs
  • Slurpy Swamp
  • Risky Reels
  • Dirty Docks

From what we can gather, the upgrade benches are pretty much everywhere, so just be sure to keep an eye out as you’re running around for the benches as you can see in the screenshot above.

Once you’ve found one, you’ll need to make sure that you’ve got enough materials. Fortnite’s upgrading weapons system requires you have plenty of wood, stone, and metal to spend.

The higher the rarity you’re trying to upgrade to, the more materials you’ll need. We’ve included all material quantities you’ll need to upgrade weapons to each rarity down below.

Fortnite Chapter 2 Weapon Rarity UpgradeMaterials Required (Wood, Stone, Metal)
Common to Uncommon (Grey to Green)50 of each
Uncommon to Rare (Green to Blue)150 of each
Rare to Epic (Blue to Purple)250 of each
Epic to Legendary (Purple to Gold)???

As long as you’ve got the resources, walk on over to the upgrade machine and press and hold X on Xbox One, Square on PS4, E on PC, or Y on Nintendo Switch. Your weapon will be taken, materials deducted, and your shiny upgraded weapon will then be spat out.
