Fallout 76 Level Cap Explained: What the Max Level Cap Is

What the Fallout 76 Level Cap Is

Recommended Videos

Fallout 76 does away with the single-player exploration of past titles, and instead places players in servers to share their world and adventures with others. One thing that hasn’t changed, however, is that you’ll level up your character, and that has some players wondering what the max level cap is in Fallout 76.

Well, there’s kind of two answers to this. The first, technically, is that according to Fallout 76 director Todd Howard, there isn’t a max level cap in Fallout 76. You’ll continue to level up your character and earn experience as you play. However, there’s a ‘soft level cap’ of sorts that’ll stop players from being able to earn any additional SPECIAL points in the game.

Fallout 76 Level Cap Explained

What does this mean? Basically, once you hit level 50 in Fallout 76, you’ll have hit the max level cap for the SPECIAL attributes. That means you’ll no longer be able to grant any additional points into Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, or Luck.

These points not only increase overall stats, but also enable you to equip Perk Cards belonging to each attribute category to your character.

During the same panel at Quakecon 2018, Howard also confirmed that the SPECIAL stats were capped at 15, meaning you can’t just pour all 50 points into your Strength category and be an absolute tank of the wasteland.

For example, the Pack Rat perk card is a Strength card and its level 1 card costs 1 Strength point to be able to equip. So once you hit level 50, you’ll have earned 50 points spread across the different attributes. Any levels you reach over level 50 will not grant you additional perk points, but will grant you the option of choosing a new card to upgrade existing ones.

All of this has been implemented in an attempt from players from becoming too powerful and becoming a nuisance to other players within their world. From our time with Fallout 76 so far, the max level cap seems fair, and 50 perk points for your SPECIAL stats should be more than enough to create a powerful character that’s perfectly suited to your playstyle.

Plus, it’s always worth remembering that perk cards in Fallout 76 can be switched out, unlike your perks in previous Fallout games. Meaning, if you think you’ve made a bad decision, you can always switch it for something else.

How to Change Perk Cards

To do this, all you need to do is press Circle on PS4 or B on Xbox One to open up your Pip-Boy, press Triangle or Y to access the Perks menu, and then use the d-pad or left analog stick to select the equipped perk card you want to remove. From there, simply press X or A to unequip it.

Then, head down to all of your unequipped perk cards below the SPECIAL stats at the top, select the one you want to equip, and press X or A again to equip it. Keep in mind, however, that perk points assigned to a specific stat cannot be reset.
