For F1 2020, Codemasters has simplified the ERS system to bring it more in line with the real-world motorsport. ERS/KERS has been in the sport for a while, and therefore it has been a part of the games too, but the 2020 season sees it play a bigger role than ever. So that you can get a boost to get past the car in front, here’s everything you need to know about how to use overtake in F1 2020.
Overtake is a simplification of ERS, essentially. You can still set up ERS management plans before races, but Overtake allows you to use it up significantly more in large bursts, getting a boost of horsepower at the same time to try and get past another racer or fend off an attacking one.
ERS still works in the same way though, being used up when accelerating and slowly recharging as you brake or coast.
How to Use Overtake in F1 2020
Thankfully, getting the boost from overtake is as simple as pressing just one button. All you need to do is press L1 if you’re on PS4 (LB on Xbox One), at which point you’ll see the word Active in green in the bottom right of the screen, by the ERS bar.
With Overtake active, the percentage will begin to drop, with performance being hit significantly if you hit zero. With a low percentage of charge, you won’t be able to accelerate aggressively, needing to coast to build it up once more.
However, Overtake can be hugely helpful because, as its name might suggest, it lets you overtake other drivers with ease. Combine it with DRS along straights and you’ll be flying.
