This time around, Techland’s latest Dying Light game has a stronger focus on storytelling, and part of the lore that binds the narrative together is a constant reference to its main protagonist’s past. Here’s what a Pilgrim is in Dying Light 2 if you’re confused as to what the name implies.
What Is a Pilgrim in Dying Light 2? Explained
Aiden Caldwell is Dying Light 2’s main protagonist, and when he arrives in the city of Villedor he’s very much an outsider. Normally, that would cause the locals to treat his presence with trepidation, but he’s actually revered by most of them because he’s a Pilgrim. This is a title that you’ll notice many of the locals respect a great deal.
So what does it mean exactly? Well, as explained during one of the game’s featurette Dying 2 Know episodes, Pilgrims are explained as a group of outcast survivors who essentially function as couriers between settlements. With communication systems down due to the infection and ensuing general chaos of post-apocalyptic society, the only method of sending news and messages is to hand them over to a brave few willing to take the risk and deliver it by hand.
As a Pilgrim, Aiden travels across the world, risking life and limb to keep people connected. They operate outside the jurisdiction of towns and settlements, navigating the no man’s land in between… for a price.
