How to Switch to Classic Battle Mode in Dragon Quest XI
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is the latest installment of a long-standing —and much beloved— franchise. One of the hallmarks of the series has always been its commitment to the turn-based combat that has been traditional for JRPGs —a trope that Dragon Quest actually helped establish. Echoes of an Elusive Age is no different, and the turn-based combat is still a core component of the game, except this time there are some neat tweaks that change the flow of battle. Essentially, you can play in two different modes: the new Free Form mode, which allows you to move around in real-time before executing an action and is the default mode, or a Classic Battle Mode. If you’re looking to switch to Classic Battle Mode in Dragon Quest XI, though, here’s what you need to know.
First, it’s worth reiterating that the game starts out on the Free Form fighting battle mode, which pulls the camera out and lets you move your characters around the battlefield when they aren’t performing an action. This is a purely visual difference, and there’s no benefit to where your characters are placed. But you can, of course, switch to a traditional JRPG camera battle system. This will place all your characters in a line, as is traditional in JRPGs. To do this, press triangle to open up the menu, then select misc., go to system settings, battle mode, and select classic camera. You can switch between the two at any time.
