Dragon Quest XI: How to Flee Battles

How to Flee Battles in Dragon Quest XI

Recommended Videos

Dragon Quest is a seminal JRPG, innovating mechanics and story tropes that were used as inspiration for literally hundreds of games since the first game launched back in 1986. Although the latest title, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, does iterate the formula quite a bit, introducing some interesting new elements to gameplay we haven’t seen before, what’s always been so refreshing about the series is its commitment to tradition. As such, turn-based battles remain a core feature of the experience, though there are some neat changes that up the pace and freedom of movement quite a bit from games of old. Not to mention, there are no random battles this time around: all enemies can be seen traversing the open-world and they only engage with you if you bump into them. Once you’re actually engaged in combat though, you might well be wondering how to flee battles in Dragon Quest XI. Here’s what you need to know.

At the very start of a battle in Dragon Quest XI, you’ll notice a small menu will pop up with a few options —one of which is “flee.” Yes, fleeing battles are theoretically as easy as selecting that option. The trouble is, though, it’s possible enemies will block your way, locking you into battle, so that won’t always work. We haven’t as of yet found anything that increases your chances of being able to flee successfully in Dragon Quest XI, but if we do, we’ll update this post and let you know.

For those that have the game set to Classic Camera battle mode, you can hit triangle to bring up the tactics menu then select flee. If you have the battle mode set to Free Form Fighting, you can run to the edge of the blue circle and the flee option will appear.

That’s all you need to know about how to flee battles in Dragon Quest XI. For more useful guides on the game, check out our wiki page.
