best beginner classes diablo 2

Diablo 2: Resurrected has arrived and players are either rediscovering Diablo 2 after many years or perhaps giving it a try for the first time; with or without Diablo 3 experience. In any case, there are a lot of either new or rusty Diablo 2 players out there that might be wondering what the best classes are for beginners. Diablo 2, after all, is far more intimidating than Diablo 3 with its lack of free respeccing. There are seven classes, so we’ll go over three that we feel are the best classes for beginners in Diablo 2 over the other four.

Best Classes for Beginners in Diablo 2

1. Necromancer

The Necromancer in Diablo 2 is similar to its counterpart in Diablo 3, but the potential to have an even bigger army of the dead. What makes the Necromancer in Diablo 2 a really nice class for beginners is that if you follow a Summoner-style of Necro, you can put so many bodies in between you and the enemies, and make them do the work for you.

You can use this freedom to not have to be in the thick of battle to carefully plan your next moves. Maybe you’re slinging Bone and Poison spells from a distance, or perhaps you’re laying down curses. Either way, having an army of the undead as your personal bodyguard team gives you a lot of freedom to learn the game at an easier pace.

2. Barbarian

The Barbarian is perhaps the most well-known and well-understood character class in the Diablo franchise. It’s persistent across all three games and is incredibly straightforward to play. It’s your bread and butter, melee class. Give it a big sword or axe, pump some points into your favorite attacking skills such as the classic Whirlwind skill, which allows you to spin to win through groups of enemies, and start ripping and tearing your way through swathes of adversaries.

It has an entire skill tree dedicated to just perfecting specific weapons and enhancing your prowess with them. It doesn’t require a ton of planning or thinking, it just simply makes you stronger with the items that you like to use. You can then experiment with various Warcries and Combat Skills that fit your playstyle as the cherry on top.

3. Sorceress

Just as the Barbarian is the basic melee class in Diablo 2, the Sorceress is the pure magic class. If you’re the type of person that is more comfortable in a mage robe and tends to play action-RPGs from that perspective, then this is the beginner class for you.

The Sorceress has three different elemental skill trees and there are lots of creative and effective ways to mix and match them to create your perfect elemental mage.

Playing the class is again, very straightforward. Lob spells at your enemies and watch them explode. While yes, as a mage you need to be aware that you’re squishier than a class like a Barbarian, be prepared to do lots of running around as you sling spells while moving around out of danger. Still, it’s a fairly easy class for beginner Diablo 2 players to pick up.

Worst Class for Beginners in Diablo 2 – The Assassin

Ultimately, most of the classes in Diablo 2 aren’t too difficult to play and are acceptable for beginners. Check them all out, see what playstyle fits you best, and just go with it and learn on the fly.

However, if we have to point out one class that might be the hardest for a beginner to learn, it would probably be the Assassin.

The Assassin is a great class but it’s one of the most complex to use properly in the game. It has two distinct play styles. The first leans towards creating traps for enemies, which require intelligent point distribution and placement to get the most out of it.

The other is the Martial Arts tree which uses a unique combo type system where you build charges that you then unleash in a skill combo that can be very potent but it requires quick reaction, timing, and again, proper skill placement and understanding of Diablo 2.

Go for the Assassin if you feel confident, but you’re at this guide for a reason, so maybe save it for a second run-through after you’ve got your feet wet.
