If you’ve played through Chapter 3, then you’ll know the scene in question, which features a herbalist who comes to an unfortunate end. Technically speaking, yes, you can actually save him. He doesn’t have to die — though he is intended to for the game to progress.

In fact, even if you save him, he won’t have any dialogue to share his thanks and won’t even react to you running past him at all! Still, it is possible if you feel morally obliged.

To do so, as soon as the two guards escorting him walk through the gate, sling a rock at the one not wearing a helmet. As soon as the other guard starts to notice that his ally is dead, lob an Ignifer Pot at him and sprint toward him. You can then use a knife to kill him, leaving the Herbalist tied up but still alive and well.
